Kristian Matte will play a 14th season with the Alouettes

The oldest member of the Alouettes has not yet said his last word. The Gray Cup champions announced that Kristian Matte will return for a 14e season with the Sparrows in 2024.

“Veterans of 14 seasons in the CFL are not commonplace,” said Danny Maciocia, general manager of the team, in a press release. Matte is a guy everyone likes. He played a key role in our last Gray Cup victory. »

The offensive lineman played every regular season and playoff game with the Alouettes in 2023. In the final against the Blue Bombers, his offensive line unit only allowed two quarterback sacks on Cody Fajardo, who was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player.

The 38-year-old Blainvillois played 185 games during his career, all with the Alouettes. He has worn their colors since his debut in 2010. In this regard, the guard ranks ninth in team history, with the same number of games played as kicker Don Sweet.

“He is not afraid to stand up and speak in the locker room when things are not going well,” Maciocia emphasizes. He also sets an example on the field with his work ethic. We are fortunate to have such a leader on our team. »

The former Concordia Stingers was drafted seventh overall in 2010. He won the precious trophy that year, in his rookie season.

His 14 seasons with the Alouettes are tied with Peter Dalla Riva for third most in franchise history. Only Anthony Calvillo (16) and Scott Flory (15) played longer.
