The Red Cross is celebrating its 160th anniversary this Saturday, May 25. Interview in 12/13 info with Adriana Karembeu, ambassador of the association for 25 years.

How can we explain the longevity of the Red Cross, which celebrates its 160th anniversary on May 25, 2024? “I think it’s this incredible energy of 75,000 volunteers, always there with the people who need them”explains Adriana Karembeu, before immediately warning: “precariousness in France is increasing.” Created in 1964, the association is launching its 90th national quest, which represents “around 40% of the budget of each local unit”. However, the actions of the Red Cross “are local actions”. In detail: food and clothing aid, visits to isolated people and even social transport.

The French remain generous with the Red Cross, with an increase in donations of 8 to 10% in 2024. The association has recruited 15,000 additional volunteers in two years, including around 25% young people. “We still need to recruit more volunteers”, explains Adriana Karembeu, encouraging people to join the association. The campaign also emphasizes life-saving actions, which only 40% of French people know. Gold, “knowing how to save a life should be a duty”insists the ambassador, who recalls that this is a “civic gesture”.
