This trophy is awarded annually to the player who has demonstrated the best example of leadership and who has contributed the most to society.
Each of the 32 NHL franchises must choose one of its players for the trophy.
The winner will get a grant of US$25,000 which he will donate to the organization of his choice, and the other two finalists will have to do the same with their respective grant of $5,000.
A selection committee made up of NHL executives, including commissioner Garry Bettman and assistant commissioner Bill Daly, will be tasked with choosing the winner.
Other contenders for the King Clancy Trophy include New Jersey Devils defenseman PK Subban and Vegas Golden Knights forward Max Pacioretty.
Former Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne earned the honor last year.
