The 74-year-old sovereign, long committed to the environment, will be present at the opening ceremony at the invitation of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and at the request of the British government, according to the palace.

He represented Elizabeth II at COP26

“Global warming, loss of biodiversity” are “challenges that threaten us all and can only be met if all of society works together in a spirit of action, partnership and commitment”, the king said Wednesday from Kenya, where he is on a state visit, speaking at the United Nations office in Nairobi.

Then Prince of Wales, Charles represented his mother Queen Elizabeth II at the COP26 organized two years ago in the United Kingdom, in Glasgow. However, he did not go to COP27 in Egypt, due, according to the British press, to the opposition of Prime Minister Liz Truss, who remained in power for 49 days.

Two hundred countries must come together at COP28, one of the challenges of which lies in the creation of a fund to compensate for climate damage caused by human activities. The trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of global warming, depends in part on the decisions taken at the COPs.
