Governor General Mary Simon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of the cabinet gathered shortly after 10 a.m. to sign the approval of the decree and the Proclamation for the accession of the new sovereign.

The Chief Herald of Canada should then read the proclamation of the accession of the new sovereign in public, before a solemn ceremony with cannons, trumpets and fanfare.

Prime Minister Trudeau showed up at Rideau Hall with his son Adrien and laid flowers near the book of condolences in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at the age of 96.

Charles III was officially proclaimed Britain’s monarch on Saturday, in a lavish ceremony steeped in ancient tradition and political symbolism in London.

The new king approved a series of ordinances, including declaring the day of his mother’s funeral a public holiday. The date of the state funeral has not been announced, but it is expected to take place around September 19.
