Mme Simon plans to visit the community to meet people and “share his condolences directly with the families affected” by the tragedy that claimed the lives of 10 people in the First Nation and in the neighboring village of Weldon on September 4th.
That day, 10 people were stabbed to death and 18 others were injured by the suspects, Damien and Myles Sanderson. Both brothers also died – Damien from non-self-inflicted injuries and Myles from “medical distress” while in Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) custody.
The Governor General’s visit on Wednesday will begin at the Church of the North of the Cree Nation of James Smith, then Mme Simon will make several stops in the community.
Federal Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu visited the James Smith Cree community on September 13. She expressed her solidarity and the government’s constant support for the members of this Cree community located northeast of Saskatoon.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government would continue to “be there” for the community over the coming days, months and years.
