Last December 7, during a municipal council meeting in Longueuil, a lady who opposed the killing of the famous deer in Michel-Chartrand Park drew a parallel between the slaughter of these animals… and the massacre Israelis perpetrated by Hamas on October 7.

“Will you be able to look the does, the mothers of the fawns, in the eyes when they are pierced with an arrow and they lie over their babies to try to protect them? the woman asked, sobbing. Maybe their babies will be dying themselves, with an arrow in their body.”
“We just have to refer to all these horror photos that were presented after the massacre in Israel… Will the mayor be present at this killing?”
During this meeting, a psychologist specializing in pet therapy also took the microphone to say that certain residents of Longueuil will need psychological support to deal with their distress and their feeling of helplessness caused by this situation.

BREATHING THROUGH YOUR NOSE
You will tell me that it is an anecdote.
Yes, well, OK.
But it is an anecdote that says a lot about what is happening in the West.
Some people are completely losing it.
Are you telling people to wear a mask when they enter a restaurant to protect themselves and others during a pandemic?
Hard-right followers organize a “freedom convoy” and cry fascism and dictatorship!
Are you saying that governments should take our reception capacity into account when setting immigration thresholds?
Radical left activists call you racist and xenophobic!
Right away the big words…
Yesterday, the National Post published a very interesting text on the climate of polarization which is poisoning the political landscape, but also public discourse.
Our reactions are becoming less and less rational and more and more emotional, observe many social science experts.
We are losing all sense of proportion.
Before, members of the “other side” were considered adversaries. Now they are considered enemies.
Now, you don’t argue with an enemy, you don’t debate with him. You crush it.
Add to that the fact that Westerners have become so comfortable that they perceive any criticism as a “micro-aggression”, and any law or regulation as a frontal attack on the rights and freedoms of citizens, and you end up with people who claim that killing deer to control their overpopulation is genocide.
I think we’re due for a big yoga session.
Hey, we should ask Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau to teach us how to breathe through our noses.
We inhale… We exhale… Namasté.

A CUL-DE-SAC
We can’t continue like this.
Both on the right and on the left, we will have to relearn how to discuss.
Because this hyper-polarizing climate – created and fueled by social media – prevents us from moving forward and leads absolutely nowhere.
