Equipped with artificial intelligence, killer robots could soon become reality.

The scene looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie. Mini drones, programmed using artificial intelligence to kill independently, attack a university. These images disseminated by the United Nations could soon become reality. By 2030, several states will no doubt be equipped with killer robots. The version which comes closest to it has been in service since 2013. It is a sentinel robot deployed in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas. Armed with a machine gun and grenade launcher, it was developed by Samsung. For Commander Brice Erbland, the killer robot will have to be endowed with human perception to judge the adversary’s dangerousness without being mistaken.

All the great powers are investing in artificial intelligence. Russia has already engaged in Syria an unmanned tank, controlled remotely by a soldier. In this regard, Vladimir Putin said in 2017: “Whoever becomes the leader in this area will be the master of the world.” After gunpowder and nuclear weapons, the autonomous killer robot could well mark the third revolution in the art of war.
