A man who shot his victim at point-blank range after a quarrel in front of a hair salon was found guilty of first-degree murder Thursday morning at the Montreal courthouse.
Selwin Georges Chin, whose trial began a month ago, was accused of the premeditated murder of Mark Jackson.
The altercation that occurred in 2020 near a hair salon and the murder were filmed by a surveillance camera. The video sequence was also presented to the jury.
An argument between Mark Jackson, aged 40, and the murderer broke out in front of the Improved Kuts barbershop in Saint-Laurent, Montreal, in February 2020. It all ended in a murder two hours later: the A suspect with a gun then shot Mr. Jackson at point-blank range, according to the Crown’s account.
This jury verdict is the accomplishment of several years of work, underlined Crown prosecutor Me Philippe Vallières-Rolland.
“The jury accepted our theory of cause that Mr. Chin was seeking revenge on the victim who had humiliated him an hour earlier. We have a thought for the victim’s partner who was present throughout the trial. Despite the intensity of the emotions she was experiencing, she remained strong and proud until the end,” he explained.
Sentencing submissions will take place next week.
