Kia Rondo or Mazda5: which one to choose?

For various reasons, a minivan or a large SUV is not suitable for everyone, even when the family grows and a third row of seats becomes necessary. What are the options then?

There are more compact six- or seven-seater vehicles that can do the trick in terms of space, convenience and most importantly budget. They are also more energy efficient solutions.

We naturally think of the Dodge Journey, which sold in very large numbers until its withdrawal from the market at the end of the 2020 model year. Other models often considered include the Kia Rondo and the Mazda5. Are you hesitating between the two? Let’s try to see more clearly…

Kia Rondo

With its optional third row of seats, the Rondo can accommodate seven people, which enhances its practicality. It has more of a crossover profile than a minivan, especially with its conventional, non-sliding side doors.

The first generation (2007-2012) offered a 175 horsepower four-cylinder and a 192 horsepower V6, but the second (2014-2017) made do with the base engine, with power reduced to 164 horsepower. Its fuel economy is interesting.

Mazda5

Discontinued after 2017, it really is a “mini” van, sliding doors included. At its debut, the Mazda5 could seat seven people, but following its redesign, the number of seats fell to six.

The first generation (2005-2010) featured a 153 horsepower four-cylinder. Same thing for the second (2012-2017), but with increased power to 157 horsepower. The ride is quite dynamic, mainly thanks to the well-tuned steering and suspension.

Comparison

In terms of dimensions, it is worth noting that the wheelbase of both models is identical. The Rondo is wider, more powerful and lighter. Its utility volume is also greater. Its most recent editions also have a more modern interior.

Despite this, the Mazda5 retained better value, also being generally more reliable. For a copy of the same year and the same mileage, expect to pay more.

In any case, be sure to try it out and check if you have enough space in the back seats or the ability to install a baby seat. Then demand a full mechanical inspection. Happy shopping!
