The Russian army had to leave Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second most important city, which now looks like nothing more than a battlefield.

Buildings gutted as far as the eye can see. Two months after the start of the war in Ukraine, northern Kharkiv looks nothing more than a battlefield. The Russian forces left the scene, leaving behind them the traces of the fighting, including charred cars. The walls still bear the Z sign, symbol of the Russian invasion. “It’s a nightmare, there were still heavy shots when we left”, confides a Ukrainian woman. Russian forces are now 40 kilometers east of Kharkiv.

“As in most wars, there are only losers. Russia will have lost men, credibility and loyalty to the international community. Ukraine is in a critical state, whether either on the military level but also on the economic level”explains Jean-Paul Paloméros, former Chief of Staff of the Air Force.
