Kevin Costner presented the first part of his saga in preview, Sunday in Cannes, out of competition. For the race for the Palme d’Or, “Emilia Pérez” by Jacques Audiard is the favorite.
Something new in the West. The Cannes Film Festival took on the appearance of a western on Sunday May 19, with the presentation, out of competition, of Horizon: an American saga, by Kevin Costner. A day also marked by the rave reviews which accompanied Jacques Audiard’s film Emilia Pérez. Here is what you should remember from this new day on the Croisette.
Kevin Costner draws “Horizon”…
A dance with one of the big wolves of Hollywood. Kevin Costner took to the steps of the Cannes Film Festival to premiere Horizon: an American saga. This western in the great tradition of the genre is made up of four parts, the first two of which will be released in France on July 3 and September 11.
The latest feature film from the director of Dancing with the wolves Or Open Range tells the history of America, through the saga of the settlers who set out to conquer the West. For Kevin Costner, “it’s more the promise of what America could be for those who emigrated from Europe”. According to him, “They were promised that there was more land in the United States than anyone could imagine. They were promised that if you were tenacious enough, strong enough, you could become its master.”
…And is decorated with the badge of officer of the Order of Arts and Letters
The American actor did not leave France empty-handed. Kevin Costner received the badge of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters from Rachida Dati, the Minister of Culture, this Sunday.
“I am truly grateful to have been able to be recognized for my contribution to the arts, confided the 69-year-old actor and director during a ceremony organized at the Palais des Festivals in the presence of his children. I’ll be honest, I made the mistake of looking to see who had already received this distinguished award before me. It suddenly made me feel very small.”
The Minister of Culture took the opportunity to launch “I will always love you!” to the American actor, in reference to Bodyguard.
“Emilia Pérez” makes a strong impression
What if we already had the first favorite for the Palme d’Or of this 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival? Jacques Audiard’s latest film, Emilia Pérez, had the effect of a bomb on Saturday during its presentation. Already rewarded in 2015 with Dheepan, the French director thrilled the Croisette with what some describe as a musical thriller.
Noémie Merlant makes a splash on the balcony
This girl is on fire. Discovery in 2019 with Portrait of the girl on fire, Noémie Merlant continues to chart her path in French cinema. This year, she presented her second creation, Women on the balcony, a feminist and horrific comedy, during the Midnight Screening.
And his film was greeted with a long standing ovation from the public present during this screening. Enough to move the young director.
Difficult aftermath of evenings
“You have to eat well and drink plenty of water.” This is the advice of a festival-goer to avoid having a complicated aftermath. Because during the Cannes Film Festival the days are long, and sometimes last until the next morning. And not all of them are necessarily dedicated to film screening, as France 3 Côte d’Azur was able to observe.
Immersive films are making their mark
Something new is coming to the Croisette this year: the immersive competition. This competition, sponsored by Jean-Michel Jarre, presents eight works, some of which feature the voices of cinema personalities such as Cate Blanchett or Léa Seydoux. With the program: a gay sauna, an exploding star and many other sensory experiences.
On the program for Monday in Cannes
There will be entertainment on Monday in Cannes in more than one way. To begin this second week on the Croisette, two significant events are on the program:
- Japanese animation studio Ghibli will receive an honorary Palme d’Or before the screening of a documentary on the creation of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest masterpiece, The Boy and the Heron. On this occasion, four new mini-films will be revealed, including an unexpected sequel to the cult classic My Neighbor Totoro.
- David Cronenberg, too, is used to livening up the Croisette. The director of Crimes of the Future or The Fly has often been able to shock the public while charming them. This year, he returns to the Cannes Film Festival with The Shroudswhich brings together Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger.
