Kenyan marathon runner Lawrence Cherono suspended for doping

Kenyan marathoner Lawrence Cherono, who has previously won the Boston and Chicago marathons, has been banned for seven years for doping and attempting to use false documents to justify his positive drug test.

Cherono tested positive for trimetazidine, a drug used to prevent angina and dizziness or decreased vision, in 2022 and was suspended just before the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

He won the Boston and Chicago marathons in 2019, and his personal best is two hours, three minutes and four seconds set in 2020 — the 12the fastest in history over the distance.

His suspension is retroactive to the start of his provisional suspension in 2022, but at the age of 35 it could mean the end of his sporting career.
