After three years of record drought, the Horn of Africa is facing intense rainfall. Floods have killed at least 260 people in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

In the middle of an ocean of mud, thousands of families were forced into exodus in the Garissa region (Kenya). Residents are fleeing their homes, submerged in floods. For several weeks, intense precipitation, brought by the El Niño phenomenon, has fallen on Eastern Africa. Kenya, Ethiopia, but also Somalia are concerned. HAS Beledweyne, in Somalia, the desert landscape found itself drowned by water.

Extreme weather events

The phenomenon, rare and spectacular in this region of the world, has left at least 260 dead in the three countries and more than two million displaced. “The floods were so fast and strong (…) The most important thing was to save the lives of our children“, explains displaced Sadia Sharif Hassa. These floods are hitting the Horn of Africa after three years of record drought. These extreme climatic events are a reflection of what awaits one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change.
