Ken named, but not Barbie? Fans of the film and actor Ryan Gosling denounce the irony of the situation

It’s an incomprehensible choice for fans of the film. Neither the director of barbie nor Margot Robbie, who plays the iconic doll, were nominated for the Oscars on Tuesday January 23, unlike Ryan Gosling as Ken.

The irony of the situation, given the themes developed by the film, was highlighted by many Internet users: “Naming Ken, but not Barbie, is literally the plot of the film”launched novelist Brad Meltzer on X (formerly Twitter), about Ryan Gosling’s nomination for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Because “Barbie”, a global blockbuster for summer 2023, is intended to be a scathing satire on the difficulties women face in getting their talents recognized. Both Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie have already racked up a litany of nominations and awards on the Hollywood circuit and their presence in the Oscars list was expected. However, if barbie garnered eight nominations, including one in the best picture category, the absence of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie from the best director and best actress categories disappointed fans and cast members.

Ryan Gosling was one of the first to express his incomprehension: “I am extremely honored to be nominated (…) but there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no film without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie”he declared, before adding: “To say I am disappointed that they were not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
