“A fire occurred at the Kostenko mine, which resulted in the death of 11 people, while 18 victims with varying degrees of injuries were taken to hospital,” the regional administration said in a statement.
According to the same source, “of the 252 miners present underground, 205 miners were brought to the surface”.
This is the second fatal accident in two months on a group site, after the death of five miners in mid-August in the same region.
The tragedy took place in a mine not far from the town of Karaganda, an industrial region in central Kazakhstan where the Minister of Emergency Situations Syrym Sharipkhanov visited.
The ArcelorMittal group is regularly accused by Kazakhstan for non-compliance with safety or environmental standards.
