It is a return that was eagerly awaited. In metropolitan France, the public of Arles had the first to zouker to the rhythm of the greatest hits of Kassav’.
A concert full of emotion
The concert began with the voice of Jacob Desvrieux. Pillar of the West Indian group, the singer and guitarist was swept away by the Covid in July 2021. A shock, at the time, for the other members of the group with whom he had shared the Kassav adventure for more than 40 years. “It was necessary to find the scene to tell him that we love him” testifies today Jocelyne Béroard, historical singer of the group. “I think it’s our way of expressing mourning” she adds.
On the public side, hearing Kassav’ live again was a real expectation, even if, before this concert, some had apprehensions. “We are still anxious because it is the first concert without Jacob” reports a fan. But from the first notes, the public is conquered. Sye Bwa or Zouk La Sé Salt Medikaman Nou Nithe group’s hits from the 80s set the ancient theater on fire.
Two new members on stage
To get back on stage, the group has integrated “little new ones”. Karim Verger replaces Jacob Desvarieux on guitar. A heavy responsibility and pride for this young 28-year-old musician from Guadeloupe, renowned in the profession. “I really admire his game, what he composed. You shouldn’t try to be better, but do what you have to do with a lot of respect” he explains with humility, referring to his predecessor.
Patrice Hulman is the group’s other new recruit. An artist who already has a great career behind him. Singer and composer, he had his first big success in 2008 with the title cabin, interpreter in duet with rapper Misié GG, alias Fuckly. With Kassav’, a new artistic life begins. “There are the choreographies, you have to learn the texts, do the backing vocals. I’m getting my bearings. A few more dates and I’ll be fine” he says with a smile. As in the heyday, Kassav’ left for a world tour.
Next Kassav’ concert: August 11, 2023 in Hoogstraten, Belgium
