Karine’s Journal: Sylvain Croteau’s Battle Against Violence in Sports

Sylvain Croteau, a dedicated advocate against violence in sports, co-founded Sport’Aide in 2015 to provide a safe space for athletes and support for those affected by abuse. Based in Quebec, the organization has expanded its focus to include leisure activities and offers confidential support services. As it nears its 10th anniversary, Sport’Aide has conducted 1,800 interventions, reflecting its growing impact. Croteau emphasizes the importance of a safe sporting environment for youth, while also sharing Sport’Aide’s model globally.

Insightful Conversations with Karine Gagnon

For nearly a decade, Sylvain Croteau, a life-long sports enthusiast, has dedicated himself to the vital mission of combating violence and abuse within the realm of sports—a sector that can offer immense benefits to the youth when approached healthily.

In 2015, Mr. Croteau, alongside athlete Guylaine Dumont, co-founded the pioneering organization Sport’Aide with the objective of creating a safe space for athletes.

Recently, the organization’s focus has expanded to encompass leisure and outdoor activities, providing a round-the-clock, free, and confidential virtual support service for individuals in need.

This initiative is designed to assist not only athletes but also their parents and anyone who may observe or be affected by abusive situations.

The Heart of Sport’Aide in Quebec

Based in Quebec, Sport’Aide is a source of immense pride for Sylvain Croteau. He notes, “Maintaining a healthy distance from sports organizations and federations is crucial. Otherwise, it would be too easy for them to seek our assistance too frequently. Sport’Aide operates independently, and we cherish that independence.”

Originating from Val-Alain, Sylvain spent his formative years there, immersing himself in the vibrant world of sports through multiple television screens and radios, often tuning into the Expos. “My parents joked that my passion bordered on obsessive,” he recalls with a chuckle.

He pursued a degree in print journalism at CEGEP de Jonquière, where his love for writing flourished. He has authored several children’s books and a biography, and is currently collaborating with Geneviève Jeanson, one of Sport’Aide’s spokespersons, on her biography, with more writing projects on the horizon.

Starting as a sports reporter at Radio-Canada, he transitioned into event management, ultimately moving to Quebec City in 1991 to study at Laval University while working with the Quebec Nordiques for four seasons.

During his time with the Nordiques, he gained valuable insights into the inner workings of a major sports organization, a learning experience that also shattered some of his illusions about professional sports.

He witnessed the intricate dynamics of the Eric Lindros situation and the eventual departure of the Nordiques in 1995, which profoundly impacted his perspective.

The Birth of a Vision

After a few years at Hydro-Québec and various other engagements, Sylvain found himself in need of a break. This period of reflection sparked the idea of establishing an organization focused on athlete support.

While driving, he heard Guylaine Dumont discussing an upcoming tournament on the radio, which prompted him to reach out to her. Their conversations revealed her experiences with violence and abuse from coaches.

“I asked her why she hadn’t sought help, and she responded, ‘There is no help available.’ It was then that we gathered a diverse group of about ten individuals to conceptualize what Sport’Aide could mean for the sports community,” he shared.

Launching into Action

Connections were made with government entities as it became clear that many organizations lacked the necessary tools to address these issues effectively.

The shocking revelations surrounding Canadian skiers abused by their coach Bertrand Charest provided a significant impetus for Sport’Aide’s mission. “It was a turning point for us,” Croteau remarked.

In May 2018, the Quebec government entrusted Sport’Aide with its first mandate, leading to the development of activities, workshops, and educational programs aimed at empowering organizations to independently handle such cases.

As Sport’Aide approaches its 10th anniversary in January, efforts are underway to document their findings and enhance support services. Last year alone, they recorded 1,800 interventions, a notable increase from 1,500 the previous year, reflecting exponential growth.

Global Reach and Impact

Mr. Croteau has traveled extensively across Canada and beyond to share the Sport’Aide model. Four years ago, he was invited by the Council of Europe to join its Healthy and Safe Sport Committee, marking him as the only North American member.

He passionately advocates for the positive impact of sports when cultivated in a safe environment, reminding us that one in three young individuals in Quebec abandons sports before reaching secondary school.

“The innovative approach of Sport’Aide fills me with pride,” emphasizes its co-founder. “While we have made significant strides, there is still much work ahead.”
