Kamala Harris to announce running mate by Tuesday

(Washington) Kamala Harris could announce her running mate in the race for the White House on Monday, before embarking with him on a multi-day tour of key states aimed at transforming her campaign’s momentum into lasting support.

The name of who would become her vice president if the Democratic candidate is elected could be revealed at any time before a first tandem rally planned for Tuesday evening in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Democratic duo must then visit six other key states until Saturday where the November 5 election will be played out against Republican Donald Trump.

The choice of who will accompany her in the campaign is crucial for the vice president, forced to make a very quick decision after the resounding announcement of Joe Biden’s withdrawal two weeks ago. Such a selection process usually lasts months.

The lucky winner must be able to appeal to a broader electorate than the one already leaning towards Kamala Harris and help her compensate for the weak points of her campaign.

Several names keep coming up: first, that of Josh Shapiro, governor of the key state of Pennsylvania and a 51-year-old professional politician.

Pennsylvania is one of the states that carried Joe Biden to the White House in 2020 and that Democrats will have to conquer again in November.

The list of contenders also includes Mark Kelly, a former astronaut turned Arizona senator, and Tim Walz, a Minnesota governor with an unusual background.

The three men met with Kamala Harris in Washington on Sunday, according to US media reports.

The names of Andy Beshear, Governor of Kentucky, and the current Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, are also circulating.

Donald Trump has chosen JD Vance, a 40-year-old senator, as his running mate. But he has been embroiled in controversy, proving to be more of a thorn in his side than an asset so far.

Good dynamics

On Monday, Kamala Harris is also due to formally accept her party’s nomination, after online voting by several thousand Democratic delegates closes late in the day.

She has been assured of being nominated since Friday, when the Democratic Party announced that she had already won more than half of their votes.

“We are going to win this election,” she said after the announcement, boiling down the stakes of the November vote to one question: “What kind of country do we want to live in? A country of freedom, compassion and the rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear and hate?”

During their trip this week, Kamala Harris and her running mate will visit states in the south and west of the country – Georgia, Arizona and Nevada – where they will have to consolidate the votes of the black and Hispanic populations.

A month ago, Donald Trump had widened the gap in key states against Joe Biden, notably after a catastrophic debate for the 81-year-old Democratic president, which proved fatal to his candidacy.

The entry into the race of Kamala Harris, almost two decades Donald Trump’s junior, has reshuffled the cards.

She has notably caught up with him in voting intentions and seen her fundraising soar. A new poll published Monday by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst even gave the vice president a three-point lead over Donald Trump (46% to 43%).

The former Republican president, who survived an assassination attempt in mid-July that has since faded into the background, has unleashed his blows in an attempt to slow down his rival’s good momentum.

He particularly attacked her origins, accusing her of having “become black” for electoral reasons.

If elected president, Kamala Harris, born to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, would become the first black female president of the United States.

A possibility that the Democratic Party intends to put forward in mid-August during its national convention, scheduled for Chicago.
