In the United States, several tech figures, including Elon Musk, the boss of the social network X, have decided to contribute financially to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Among other things, they want the former Republican president to promote the cryptocurrency sector. Since the beginning of August, Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, has also received support from the tech world.

In a letter dated August 9, 1,200 tech employees gave her their support. The world of finance also publicly committed to voting for her. Big names have supported her financially, like Laurence Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs’ widow, and Jony Ive, Apple’s design grandmaster.

This support from the tech world, known for leaning to the left, is not very surprising. Originally from Oakland, located in the San Francisco Bay Area and therefore in Silicon Valley, the former senator from California knows this sector very well, which saw her grow politically. In 2010, when she spoke at Google headquarters, she launched: “You are my family”As vice-president from 2021, she also took on the issue of artificial intelligence, notably by meeting the bosses of OpenAI and Microsoft.

Despite everything, Kamala Harris has not always been very gentle with the tech giants. The Biden administration, for example, has increased its calls for better regulation of the sector, without shaking up the sector. The Silicon Valley giants also want, through these various initiatives, to remind us that the dissenting voices – notably that of Elon Musk – are for the moment largely in the minority.
