Shawn Patrick Deer had already faced justice in 2020 in connection with arms trafficking. His sister Gina Deer – who was then chief of the Mohawk council – had reported him when she learned he was carrying out a drug deal in a house she rented to him. She then collaborated in the investigation leading to her arrest, according to an article by The Press dating from 2020.

At least one firearm was found in the residence during the search, and ammunition was seized from a shed.

Shawn Patrick Deer has a heavy criminal past. The suspect had already been sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter in the 90s. He himself had surrendered to the native police the day after the intervention. He has since been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and careless storage in connection with that matter.
