Juventus Turin Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt, 22, has signed a five-year contract with Bayern Munich, the German club announced on Tuesday (July 19th). “Matthijs de Ligt was one of our main targets. With signings like this, the big targets we have are achievable (…), De Ligt should become a mainstay at FC Bayern”, welcomed the president of the German champion, Herbert Hainer in a press release.

The German club had already spotted him for several years before concluding his arrival this summer. “We already wanted to bring Matthijs to Munich three years ago. We were convinced then of his qualities as a defender, and we are even more so today. (…) He will play an important role on and in off the pitch at FC Bayern”explained Hasan Salihamidžić, sporting director of the club, in the same press release.
Matthijs de Ligt joined the academy of I’Ajax Amsterdam at the age of nine, before taking his first steps as a professional there in 2016, at the age of 17. In 2019, he achieved the Dutch league and cup double before flying to Juventus Turin. With the Italian club, he won the Serie A title in 2020, then the following year the Italian Cup and the Italian Super Cup. After 117 official matches and eight goals under the colors of Turin, Matthijs de Ligt will now delight supporters of the Bayern Munich.
