“This morning I tested positive for COVID-19. I feel good, and I will continue to work remotely this week, in accordance with public health guidelines. Please go get vaccinated and get the booster dose,” he wrote on Twitter Monday morning.
The Prime Minister had been in self-isolation since last week, after being exposed to the virus – one of his three children had contracted it. He will address Canadians at 11:15 a.m., virtually, to provide an update on the “freedom convoy” that has paralyzed downtown Ottawa since last Friday.
He received good wishes from some politicians, including the mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante. “I wish you a speedy recovery, Justin!” Take good care of yourself and your loved ones,” she wrote on Twitter. On the same network, New Democrat leader Jagmeet Singh wished him a “speedy recovery”.
Parliamentary work resumes against a backdrop of tension on Monday, as the capital is stormed by truckers from the “freedom convoy”. At the start of the day, Wellington Street, opposite the parliament, was blocked by lorries and vans, and the concert of car horns had resumed.
The presence of this convoy has forced the closure of several businesses in downtown Ottawa, and calls for its departure are beginning to be heard louder and louder. The city’s mayor, Jim Watson, as well as a few city councilors, asked the protesters to pack up.
