Justin Trudeau says he doesn’t want to attack hunters with Bill C-21

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday his government is “listening” to Canadians following the release of a definition of “assault-type firearms” that would be prohibited under a proposed legislation currently being debated and has assured that his government will not attack hunters.

“We have just presented a list and we are consulting Canadians on this subject,” he declared during a press conference in Ontario. We are not targeting rifles or shotguns. »

The weapon models his government wants to ban are those that were “created to kill the most people the fastest”, he said. Mr. Trudeau took the opportunity to assure that he will not give in to federal “conservative politicians” who “want to restore military-style assault weapons”.

The government wants to include a permanent definition of what constitutes a prohibited assault weapon in its law to strengthen gun control currently being studied by the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security.

This new measure would enhance the previous ban adopted in May 2020 which included a list of more than 1,500 models of weapons and variants of what the government considers to be assault weapons. This includes the better known models like the AR-15 and the Ruger Mini-14.

This weekend hockey player Carey Price took a public stand in favor of maintaining the importation, sale and resale of handguns in Canada. “What Justin Trudeau is trying to do is unfair. I support the CCDF [Coalition canadienne pour les droits des armes à feu] to keep my hunting tools,” he wrote on social media.

Last week, a “Poly” promo from that same pro-gun lobby also sparked outrage. The CCFAF then argued that the promotion did not refer to the tragedy, but rather to the Twitter account of PolySeSouvient, which allegedly called supporters of its organization armed trolls.

33 years ago tomorrow, December 6, 1989, in Montreal, a gunman murdered 14 women at “Poly” because they were women.
