Justin Trudeau returns to Ottawa to vote against censure motion

(Ottawa) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned to Ottawa on Wednesday as MPs prepared for a vote that could bring down his minority government — which likely won’t happen.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre made his case to MPs during a House of Commons debate Tuesday, saying a future Conservative government would bring back the “promise of Canada.”

His call for support from other opposition parties was quickly rebuffed.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Bloc Québécois have announced that they will oppose the motion during the vote to be held after question period on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bloc wants to take advantage of its new position in the minority Parliament to get the government to increase old age security benefits.

If the motion of censure were adopted, the government would be defeated and Canadians would most likely be called to a general election.
