Justin Trudeau names Manon Jeannotte lieutenant governor of Quebec

Administrator and former Mi’kmaq leader Manon Jeannotte was named lieutenant governor of Quebec on Thursday by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

Mme Jeannotte was until recently director of the School of First Nations Leaders (EDPN) at HEC Montréal, of which she was co-initiator.

Trained in administration, she was also part of the Micmac Nation Council of Gespeg, near Gaspé, for several years. She was notably head of the nation.

“Manon Jeannotte has dedicated her career to increasing the well-being of Indigenous peoples and concretely improving life in our communities,” said Prime Minister Trudeau.

“I am convinced that she will continue to make important contributions and that she will remain a source of inspiration for the people of Quebec and all of Canada in her new role. »

Ms. Jeannotte will replace J. Michel Doyon, who has held these functions since 2015.

The role of lieutenant governor is largely ceremonial today. Among other things, it is he who is called upon to dissolve Parliament to trigger elections and to sanction bills, but he does so following the advice of the government.
