Justin Trudeau and Valérie Plante to discuss firearms on Friday

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau showed himself open to discussing the issue of handguns with Mayor Valérie Plante on Friday in Montreal.

The Prime Minister made a quick visit to City Hall, first to congratulate Ms. Plante on her re-election on November 7.

Speaking briefly to the press before their meeting, Ms. Plante said she was happy to welcome back Mr. Trudeau, with whom she said she had “always worked well”, indicating that they would discuss the various issues that affect The city.

Mr. Trudeau, after welcoming the presence of a “progressive” city council, was however more specific, saying he wanted to address the issues of housing, public transportation, public safety and, more specifically, handguns.

The surge in violent incidents involving firearms in Montreal is a matter of growing concern. Both Ms. Plante and Prime Minister François Legault are calling for better border control from Ottawa and, above all, a ban on handguns.

Ms. Plante has also not shied away from harshly criticizing in the past Mr. Trudeau’s proposal to let the Cities decide on the ban on handguns, an idea that Ms. Plante called absurd as recently as Monday. .
