(Kansas City) The Associated Press has learned that the Chiefs and safety Justin Reid have agreed to terms on a three-year, $51.5 million contract, which will would sound the death knell for Tyrann Mathieu’s career in Kansas City.

The initialed deal with Reid would include $20 million guaranteed, the source told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the contract cannot officially be revealed until Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Reid was a third-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2018. He’s been one of the few good players on the Texas roster for the past four seasons. He’s started 53 of the 57 games he’s played, including 13 in 2021, a campaign in which he made 66 tackles, defended four passes and caused a fumble.
While his resume isn’t quite as stellar as Mathieu’s, whose contract expired at the end of last season after three Pro Bowl appearances, Reid is much younger and joins the Chiefs with a possibly his best years ahead of him.
The Chiefs were optimistic they could bring Mathieu back into their fold last season, but the two sides were never able to agree on a contract extension. The team seemed to take a different direction when the free agent market opened up.
Mathieu, 29, will still remain one of the Chiefs’ best takers in this market. He was part of the Chiefs’ defense revival under coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, helping the club reach three straight AFC Finals and two Super Bowl appearances, including the first victory in the Chiefs’ 50-year history. .
Stuck under the salary cap, the Chiefs gave themselves some breathing room by restructuring the contract of quarterback chaser Frank Clark. Whoever was to receive 27.8 million, including 26.3 recorded in the club’s payroll, should receive 11 million less this season.
