New legal front in the battle for the right to abortion in the United States. A Louisiana judge temporarily suspended three laws that this southern state had adopted to ban abortion on Monday, June 27.
The laws were suspended until July 8 after a complaint from a clinic and medical students, who attacked the texts on the grounds that they were too “waves” and did not clearly specify any exceptions or associated penalties. “Abortions can resume in Louisiana”immediately tweeted the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represented the plaintiffs. “Every day a clinic is open can make a difference in someone’s life”added its president Nancy Northup in a press release.
The laws have been suspended until a hearing set for July 8, but Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has already promised “to do whatever is in [son] power to ensure that laws protecting unborn children come into effect”. Similar legal battles are being played out in other states such as Florida, Utah, Ohio and Kentucky. After the US Supreme Court revoked the constitutional right to abortion on June 24, nine states immediately made this act illegal, including Louisiana.
