The trial of the fatal balcony accident in Angers (Maine et Loire)which claimed the lives of four young people in October 2016, opened on Wednesday 9 February. Five people are tried for manslaughter, after defects in the construction of the building were detected.

The trial of the balcony accident which claimed the lives of four young people aged 18 to 25, in Angers (Maine et Loire) in October 2016, started on Wednesday 9 February. During a housewarming party between students, 14 people were also injured.

The architect, the project manager, the driver and the works inspectors were called to the bar to determine the culprit of the collapse of this balcony. Investigators said the concrete slab was of poor quality. At the level of the facade, the rainwater infiltrated and gnawed at the frame. The victims’ lawyers denounce improvised work to save a few weeks on the schedule. Indicted for homicide and involuntary injury, the defendants risk three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.
