Former US President Donald Trump filed a complaint against New York State Attorney Letitia James on Monday in an attempt to block his investigation into possible tax evasion by his family group, according to court documents.
The lawsuit, filed in state federal court, accuses the Democratic prosecutor of violating the former president’s constitutional rights by conducting the investigation for political reasons.
“Its mission is driven only by political hostility and a desire to harass, to intimidate a simple citizen whom she sees as a political opponent, and to take revenge on him”, we can read in the complaint.
Letitia James launched this investigation in March 2019, suspecting the Trump Organization of having fraudulently overestimated the value of certain properties when it applied for loans to banks, and of having underestimated these same properties with the tax authorities in order to pay less taxes.
According to an article in the daily Washington post published in early December, she asked Donald Trump to come and testify at his office on January 7.
Its mission is driven only by political hostility and a desire to harass, intimidate a simple citizen whom she sees as a political opponent, and to take revenge on him.
Eric Trump, one of the sons of the Republican billionaire and executive vice-president of the Trump Organization, was heard by the prosecutor’s office in October 2020.
The former president is also targeted by other investigations in the United States. He was heard on October 18 concerning a case in which demonstrators accuse his security service of having molested them six years ago.
His group is also the target of an investigation by the Manhattan district attorney into suspicion of financial crimes and insurance fraud.
In July, the Trump Organization and its loyal accountant Allen Weisselberg pleaded not guilty to 15 counts of fraud and tax evasion in a New York court. The trial is due to open in mid-2022.
At the same time, Donald Trump is fighting to avoid having to disclose multi-year tax returns to prosecutors, while in Washington, a special Congressional committee seeks access to White House documents on the attack on the Capitol, perpetrated on January 6, 2021.
