French striker Just Fontaine died on Wednesday March 1. Player of the France team, he still holds the record for the number of goals scored in a single edition of a World Cup with 13 achievements in 1958.

This is the story of a striker who takes with him a record for eternity. During the first match of the 1958 Football World Cup organized in Sweden, Just Fontaine awakens national hope. The child of Marrakech, author of a hat-trick in opening against Paraguay, was however called at the last minute to replace the injured center-forward and plays with the shoes of another. “I was pretty full”he summarized to talk about his game. Author of 13 goals in a single World Cup, his record has still not been equaled.

A career cut short after a serious injury

The Blues finish the competition in third place. The return to France is glorious for Fontaine, but also Kopa or Piantoni. In club, the striker shines with Nice and especially Reims and wins four French championship titles and two cups. But at only 29, he had to stop his career after a double tibia-fibula fracture. Fontaine then became a coach and also brought Paris Saint-Germain up to the first division in 1974. In his life, Just Fontaine will also have pushed the ditty and ran a sports store in Toulouse, his last home. He lived at number 13, a nice nod to his number of World Cup goals.
