A historic hearing. The twelve jurors in Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York began deliberating on Wednesday, May 29, to agree on a verdict that could change the American presidential campaign. But after four hours of discussion, the panel demanded to be able to rehear certain testimonies, notably that of Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer and his main accuser in the Stormy Daniels affair.
Manhattan Court Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over this unprecedented trial against a former president of the United States, ordered the seven men and five women to retreat behind closed doors, but not without warning them against any temptation to judge facts based on their “personal opinions”. As reported CNN,he citizen panel composed of twelve people will resume its discussions Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. (3:30 p.m. Paris time).
“You have an obligation to set aside [vos] personal opinions, whether favorable or against the accused”warned the magistrate while giving his legal instructions to the jury of 12 American citizens who must decide the legal fate of their former Republican president (2017-2021), new candidate for the election scheduled for November.
Donald Trump, 77, then left the courtroom, with the judge ordering him not to leave the Manhattan courthouse building during deliberations. Forced since mid-April to come to the courtroom every day, while he is campaigning, the Republican billionaire protested to the press against “a scandalous situation” and denounced “pursuits [pénales] rigged”.
