“Once the proceedings against her, in accordance with the law, are completed, we will consider (negotiations) depending on her response.” The leader of the Burmese junta, Min Aung Hlaing, declared himself, Friday August 19, ready for negotiations with the ex-leader Aung San Suu Kyi, at the end of his trial, to find a solution to the crisis triggered by the military coup of February 2021 .
In July, a junta spokesman had already told AFP that he was not “impossible” that the military regime engage in dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi. The former leader was arrested in the military coup that overthrew her government and ended a brief period of democracy in Burma. She has since been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison on a host of charges.
She faces additional decades in prison if convicted of other offenses in a closed trial before a military court. Journalists were unable to attend the proceedings, his lawyers were unable to speak to the press and the junta gave no indication of when his trials would end.
