On the eve of July 14, the 12/13 takes you into immersion in the heart of the Navy’s multi-mission “Auvergne” frigate. She has just taken part in a NATO exercise in the Baltic Sea.

The threat is approaching. An enemy missile arrives straight at the frigate. According to the scenario of the exercise, the boat has just been hit. Everything is done to be as realistic as possible. Fire-fighting teams must intervene urgently. “It’s really timed and you have to intervene quickly so that it doesn’t spread everywhere”explains one of them. The multi-mission frigate “Auvergne” must protect the attacked Polish coasts at all costs, according to this NATO exercise. But reality suddenly takes precedence over training.

Russian planes fly over the area

Russian planes fly over the area. In international waters in the Baltic Sea, they have the right to do so, but everyone is on their guard. We must avoid the diplomatic incident. When NATO trains, Russia watches. “They have the right to watch us, obviously we have the right to be there and train”says Captain F. Auffret, Commander of the Multi-Mission Frigate (FREMM) Auvergne. For intelligence and eliminating possible threats, the frigate also houses a major asset: a caiman helicopter.
