It’s time to bring out one of the great clichés of sport. The Giro will not be won on this stage, but it can be lost for many contenders in the general classification. The 6th day of racing, between Viareggio and Rapolano Terme (180 km), is one of the most anticipated of this Tour of Italy. The riders will fight on the famous white paths, those which make the Strade Bianche very complicated at the start of the year.
Three years ago, the breakaway won on a similar stage with these dusty sectors in Tuscany. Mauro Schmid had won the day and, above all, Egan Bernal had widened the gap at the top of the general classification, en route to his coronation in Milan. Remco Evenepoel then lost two minutes… This year, Tadej Pogacar appears to be the huge favorite. The current pink jersey, winner of the Strade Bianche in March, is not the type to stay in reserve. He has a good chance of going on the attack.
