He insisted on appearing at the hearing to hear his judgment, Wednesday, May 17. Faced with the court, Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced on appeal, for active corruption and influence peddling, to three years in prison, including one year, and to three years of deprivation of his civic rights. His lawyer announced his appeal in cassation and requested a third trial. “This decision is staggering, it is questionable in law”, believes Me Jacqueline Laffont. Same condemnation for Thierry Herzog, the friend and former lawyer of Nicolas Sarkozy.
Other trials await Nicolas Sarkozy
In 2014, the two men were wiretapped by the courts and indicted, accused of having corrupted the high magistrate Gilbert Azibert, so that he could inform them about ongoing legal cases. In exchange, a position at the Monaco court had been negotiated. The magistrate was also sentenced to three years in prison for passive corruption. The conviction of the three defendants is suspended, pending a possible new trial in cassation. Sentenced in the Bygmalion case, Nicolas Sarkozy is awaiting his second trial, while in the case of the Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign, the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office has just requested a referral to the criminal court.
