For lack of evidence, Spanish justice abandoned its investigations into Juan Carlos I. The three judicial investigations which targeted the former king of Spain were dismissed and the father of Felipe VI was finally able to return to his country of origin, this Thursday, May 19, 2022, as reported by AFP. The ex-king of Spain Juan Carlos I, who went into exile in August 2020 in the United Arab Emirates on suspicion of embezzlement, returned for the first time, for a brief visit.
It was Wednesday evening that the former monarch communicated to his son King Felipe VI “his decision to travel to Spain from tomorrow until Monday May 23“, as indicated by the royal palace in a press release. Juan Carlos should first go to Sanxenxo, a locality in Galicia (north-west) where a regatta is held from Friday in which the “Bribon“, sailboat with which he was world champion in 2017. He should then join Madrid to visit his son, as well as his wife with his wife Sofia. Before leaving “the same dayr “for Abu Dhabi”where he has established his permanent and stable residence“, continued the palace.
A brief visit which comes after the investigations have been dismissed, as part of the “desire of His Majesty Juan Carlos to travel regularly to Spain in order to visit his family and friends” in a frame “private“. A visit which was strongly criticized, in particular by the radical left party Podemos, member of the coalition government of socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Why were the investigations closed without follow-up?
Because these surveysdo not allow criminal action to be taken against His Majesty Juan Carlos de Bourbon (…) in particular because of the lack of incriminating evidence, the prescription of offenses and because of the inviolability” from which he benefited as head of state until 2014, the date of his abdication, as indicated by the Spanish prosecutor’s office in a press release last March.
