Among those who attended the victory of Dane Jonas Vingegaard at the end of the 2022 edition of the Tour de France, the mayor of Bilbao Juan María Aburto came for a handover. In effect, the 110ᵉ edition will start on July 1 next year from the capital of Biscay. The first three stages will take place in the Euskadi region. “We think this is a historic moment” insists the mayor of Bilbao. “For us it is an immense joy to launch the next Tour de France because the Tour is a very important event“.
Three stages in Euskadi
A first stage at the start and finish of Bilbaothe second between Vitoria and San Sebastian. As for the third, it will follow the coast to Labourd. We do not yet know the end of this stage or even the rest of the route which will be unveiled in October in Paris. The start of the course was unveiled by Christian Prud’homme from Vitoria in Alava at the end of January. The general manager of the tour said to himself “impressed by the Basque Country“.
Showcase for the Basque Country
“It’s an incredible marketing campaign for us, showing our cities to the world.” argues Juan Mari Aburto. The mayor of the largest city in the Basque autonomous community is sure of the positive impact of an event like the Tour de France. “I’m sure that after that, people all over the world will say to themselves that they have to come to Bilbao, to Biscay, and more generally to Euskadi. And if we get to that, the game is clearly worth the candle“, he concludes.
