Kherson was taken over by Ukrainian soldiers, celebrated as heroes by civilians who came in large numbers to a town square on Saturday, November 12.
“Kherson is Ukrainian!” The slogan resonated endlessly on Saturday, November 12, in the streets of the city. Women embraced the soldiers while others wiped away their tears, the day after the entry of the Ukrainian army into the city, after eight months of Russian occupation. “I’m a 70 year old grandmother and I feel like I’m 30. I’m overwhelmed with joy, I think I can finally breathe normally“, says a resident.
Since the day before, this square has become the place where Ukrainians come with their families to celebrate the departure of the Russian forces. “I’ve been waiting for this for so long. We’ve been without water or electricity for months. But we’re happy today, it’s incredible“, reacts another woman.
Kherson’s youth perch on the cars, images of victory the Russians wanted to avoid when they told civilians to evacuate the city. Ukrainian soldiers became rock stars in Kherson, signing autographs on flags.
“It is impressive to see the number of people gathered in this square, while the city of Kherson is still within range of artillery fire from the Russians. But the joy is too strong not to come together“, says Maryse Burgot, special correspondent in Kherson.
