Jordan’s Rania angry as Emmanuel Macron prepares to meet her husband, King Abdullah II

This Tuesday, October 24, 2023, Emmanuel Macron flew to Jordan to meet King Abdullah II. A visit in connection with his recent trip to Israel and the West Bank, where he was able to meet with Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas. Amid reports that Israeli forces are preparing for a ground offensive in Gaza, the UN has strongly condemned the “blatant violations” of humanitarian law in this Palestinian enclave and called for a ceasefire, reports BFM TV.

Unfortunately, the meeting between the President of the Republic and the King of Jordan promises to be particularly tense due to the recent declarations of Queen Rania. This Tuesday, the latter gave an interview to CNN during which she expressed her opinion on the situation in the Middle East. She notably declared that the West was, according to her, “partner in crime” of the loss of Palestinian lives in Gaza and regretted the existence of a “blatant double standard” in the way events are perceived. Queen Rania thus raised crucial questions regarding the complexity of the current situation and the need to seek solutions. The Queen reiterated the importance of the principle that “Every country has the right to defend itself”. However, she also stressed that this defense should not result in a “butcher’s shop”. A clear opinion.

“Every effort will be made to ensure their release”

For his part, Emmanuel Macron also exchanged a few words with Hadas Kalderon, a mother of Franco-Israeli hostages. “I told him I only trusted him. […] But he told me that they (his relatives, editor’s note) were taken hostage, that they were kidnapped. He doesn’t know if they are together. Every effort will be made to ensure their release.” she confided into the microphone of our colleagues. It now remains to determine the results of the meeting between the President of the Republic and the King of Jordan.
