More than a hundred Jordanians demonstrated in front of the headquarters of theUNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, in Amman (Jordan), on the evening of Wednesday January 31. The objective was to support local employees, under fire from criticism. “I came today to understand why we suspended international aid to UNRWA, which will have the consequence of withdrawing aid intended for Palestinians and residents of Gaza,” says Hanna Rabih, a Jordanian of Palestinian origin.
UNRWA employs 13,000 people in Gaza
The UN agency is blamed by Israel for the alleged participation of some of its employees in the attack on Hamas against the Jewish state on October 7. Since then, a dozen countries have suspended their donations. Wednesday, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, reiterated these accusations. For his part, Antonio Guterresthe UN Secretary-General, called for support fromUNRWA. The agency employs 13,000 people in Gaza.
