Twelve days before the first round of the legislative elections, the leader of the National Rally Jordan Bardella insisted that he could “not act” without an “absolute majority”.
Jordan Bardella is now playing it safe after having multiplied his promises during the European campaign, much more vigilant about the application of his program. Tuesday June 18, the president of the RN even goes so far as to set conditions for his entry into Matignon. “I will need an absolute majority. If we are in a situation of relative majority as is the case since the re-election of Emmanuel Macron in 2022 then the Prime Minister cannot act. I am not going to sell the French measures or actions that I could not bring about”, did he declare.
In other words, Jordan Bardella will only agree to become Prime Minister if, and only if, the National Rally obtains at least 289 seats in the National Assembly. The Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, sees this as a sign of renunciation, because this clarification comes after several changes of footing, in particular on the repeal of the pension reform.
