The Smile, the side project of Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke, has been forced to cancel the remainder of its European tour. Composer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood was rushed to hospital recently with an infection of an undisclosed nature.
Although he is out of danger, he now needs rest to recover, said the band, a trio made up of the two Radiohead figures and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner.
“A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill with an infection, which landed him in the emergency room in intensive care.“, The Smile said on his Instagram account early Friday evening, July 12.
“Fortunately, he is now out of danger and will return home soon.“. But, the post continues, “Jonny’s medical team has asked us to cancel all his engagements until he can fully recover. To do this, The Smile’s European tour in August is cancelled. (…) We wish Jonny a speedy recovery,” concludes the message.
The tour, which included 16 dates, was to pass through many European festivals this summer, including Rock en Seine in Paris on Sunday August 25, but also in Bordeaux on August 26 at the Arkea Arena and at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium (August 18).
The Smile, whose concerts are experiences full of grace and surprises, released a second album at the end of January, the sumptuous Wall of Eyes, that the trio’s fans were eagerly awaiting to discover live.
The Rock en Seine festival, which had mentioned the cancellation on its Instagram account while wishing Jonny Greenwood a speedy recovery, announced on Saturday July 13 at noon that it had found a replacement band for The Smile: the Pixies, the legendary alternative rock band from the 80s, who will therefore play on the Saint-Cloud pitch on Sunday August 25, the same day as LCD Soundsystem and PJ Harvey.
