(New York) Joni Mitchell’s surprise appearance last summer at the Newport Folk Festival has been turned into a show album.
Mitchell took the stage alongside Brandi Carlile and Friends in her first full performance since 2002. She performed her greatest hits: Big Yellow Taxi, shine, help me And Come In From the Cold. She also played a solo instrumental version of Just Like This Train.
The 11-track album, titled At Newport, will be released on July 28. It is produced by Carlile and Mitchell, with the collaboration of the famous composer Cameron Crowe.
Brandi Carlile was scheduled to perform at the festival on July 24, 2022, alongside Wynonna Judd, Holly Laessig of Lucius, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons and many more, but Mitchell’s attendance was a surprise. Judd was seen wiping away tears as Mitchell sang Both Sides Nowa song from 1966.
Mitchell has been back in the spotlight since suffering a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 2015. In June, she will headline a concert at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Wash.
Joni Mitchell was honored as Person of the Year by MusiCares at this year’s Grammy Awards festivities and she accepted a Grammy for Best Historical Album. She was also the 2023 recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress.
