The actress of the series Stranger Things, who accused Mel Gibson of homophobia and anti-Semitism, notably recounted having gone through a very difficult period after this separation, believing that a “part of his life was over“.
Their story began around 1989, two months after they first met at the premiere of the feature film. Great Balls on Fire!. Very much in love, they quickly got engaged and Johnny Depp had “Winona Forever” tattooed on his arm. A tattoo that he has since modified since the couple separated in 1993 after about four years of relationship.
“I didn’t take care of myself”
A difficult break to take for the actress who asked for help from Michelle Pfeiffer, his partner on The Time of Innocence, a film shot a few days after the breakup. “I remember Michelle telling me ‘It’ll be okay’, but I couldn’t hear her” she said. She reveals in particular having had to consult a therapist in order to get his head above water: “He suggested that I imagine myself younger and be kinder to this version of me.“.
But the discomfort was quite deep since Winona Ryder compared her state at the time to that of the character Susanna Kaysen that she embodied in A stolen life and who had entered a psychiatric hospital after having attempted suicide. “I remember playing this character who ends up being tortured in a Chilean prison. I was looking at these fake bruises and fake cuts on my face while filming (…) I remember looking at myself and saying to myself ‘This is what I’m doing to myself inside’ Because I wasn’t taking care of me” she let go.
Since then, everything seems to be back to normal for the 50-year-old American who has shared her life with model maker Scott Mackinlay Hahn for more than ten years. For his part, Johnny Depp is just recovering from his trial with his ex Amber Heard, since committing to “go forward”. Winona Ryder had also expressed herself in 2016 in the columns of the Times on this relationship between his ex and the actress from Texas.
