John Williams, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

By taking John Williams out of his natural partnership with American orchestras, DG had had the remarkable idea, before the pandemic, of organizing a concert placing the composer, whose 90and anniversary, at the head of the Vienna Philharmonic. The result was dazzling, commercial success at stake. Too tempting to do a rebelote with the Berlin Philharmonic! This concert is as exhilarating as the previous one, even if theElegy for cello is less convincing than the performances of Anne Sophie Mutter in Vienna. The release, available in normal and “Deluxe” versions, cuts across a third of the Viennese concert (IndianaJones“Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Pottertheme of Jurassic Park and imperial march of Star Wars), but efforts have been made to make the two products complementary (AND, Supermandiverse selection of Star Wars). On the other hand, if we consider the CD of Dudamel-Los Angeles released in 2019, we go around in circles… in the spectacular and the admirable however.
