John Sedgwick becomes general manager of the Laval Rocket

Montreal Canadiens assistant general manager John Sedgwick has agreed to a multi-season contract extension, executive vice-president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton announced Wednesday, adding that Sedgwick will immediately assume the role of general manager of the Rocket of Laval, in the American Hockey League.

Sedgwick has been a key element in the restructuring process of the Habs’ farm clubs, having acted as principal governor of the Rocket since the team’s inaugural season in 2017, in addition to having overseen the affiliation file with the Trois-Rivières Lions in the ECHL.

His main responsibilities include negotiating contractual agreements with players, strategic planning related to salary cap management, as well as situations related to the collective agreement between the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association. .

“Since joining the team, I have witnessed the tremendous work John does every day at every level of our operations,” said Gorton.

“John is a talented manager who has a wealth of experience and a very in-depth knowledge of the workings of professional hockey. His contribution to the overall management of our affiliated teams, whether with the Rocket or the Lions, deserves to be highlighted. We are excited to continue our collaboration and we are convinced that he will be able to brilliantly meet the challenges related to his new tasks as general manager of the Rocket,” added Gorton.

Before joining the CH, Sedgwick held various positions within the NHL hockey operations department in Toronto, where he remained from 2006 to 2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Acadia University and received his law degree from Dalhousie University Law School. In July 2005, he joined the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and, since 2007, he has been a member of the Ontario Bar.

Sedgwick joined the Canadiens organization in April 2013 as director of legal affairs.
