“Joe Hisaishi. A Symphonic Celebration”, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

A week after the tribute to François Dompierre, here is another project of great and beautiful melodies from the cinematographic universe, in a colossal version and planetary living legend. These are orchestral arrangements of Joe Hisaishi’s music for Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films, produced by Studios Ghibli. These themes are drawn from three of his most famous feature films: My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke And Spirited away. Deutsche Grammophon, which bets on Hisaishi in view of the results obtained by the publications around the 90e birthday of John Williams, slips here and there a house star (the mandolinist Avi Avital). We are not in “classical music”, but in generous film music, the label positioning itself in this niche against Sony, which publishes CDs by Howard Shore, Dany Elfman and Hans Zimmer. It remains to be seen if and how DG will exploit the inclinations of Joe Hisaishi, who sees himself as an artist and classical conductor, and who recorded a complete Beethoven in Japan.
