The son of the president of the United States “knowingly made a false written statement”. This is what legal documents published by the American justice system reveal on Thursday, September 14, while Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, was indicted at the federal level for illegal possession of a firearm. The facts with which he is accused date back to 2018: in order to obtain a revolver (a Colt Cobra), he declared that he did not suffer from addiction even though he admitted to having used drugs at that time.

This indictment is a significant political setback for the Biden family. In June, the son of the Democratic president reached an initial agreement negotiated with a special prosecutor, which reduced the chances of a trial, while his father is a candidate for re-election next year. But a judge expressed doubts about the validity of this agreement, now void, opening the way to a trial.

An impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden

Hunter Biden has been targeted for years by Donald Trump and the Republican camp, who accuse him of corruption. It is his business carried out in China and Ukraine, while his father was Barack Obama’s vice-president, which he is particularly criticized for. If found guilty at the end of the trial, Joe Biden’s son faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

On Tuesday, Republicans announced the launch of an impeachment inquiry into President Biden over his son’s controversial overseas affairs, accusing the Democrat of fueling a “culture of corruption”. The White House denounced this procedure as “worst of extreme political maneuvers”.
